Our backyard needed regrading & better drainage. Jacob provided a great drainage solution, a timely quote, and worked with us to add onto our project. While scheduling was busy for the spring, we were squeezed in before the heat to properly grow our yard from seed. His guys did a lot of work in 2 days: rebuilt a poorly constructed retaining wall, added catch basin, framed the back garden bed, planted a tree, & graded/seeded the lawn. After the late May rain, we have a green lawn & are very happy with the work that was done. Great communication through the entire process. Highly recommend!

Expert Site Preparation in Tucson, AZ
Site preparation is the foundation of every hardscape project Wolfberry Landscaping builds in Tucson. Before any paver, wall, or patio goes in, the ground beneath it has to be ready. That means clearing the area, grading for proper slope, and addressing what lies below the surface. Tucson soil presents a specific challenge: caliche, a calcium carbonate hardpan layer, can sit just inches below grade and block drainage completely. Without breaking through or accounting for it, water pools, bases shift, and hardscape surfaces fail early. Our site prep process includes surface clearing, caliche assessment, excavation to the correct depth, and compaction of a stable aggregate base. We also grade every site to direct monsoon runoff away from your home and hardscape features. Tucson's summer monsoon season delivers intense, concentrated rainfall that poorly graded sites cannot handle. Getting the ground right before installation protects your investment and keeps your finished hardscape level, stable, and draining correctly for years. Site Preparation FAQ
Common questions about site preparation in Tucson, AZ.
Tucson's caliche hardpan and monsoon rainfall make ground prep critical for any hardscape to stay level and drain correctly. Skipping it leads to shifting surfaces, pooling water, and early failure of pavers or walls.
Caliche is a hard calcium carbonate layer found below the soil surface in Tucson that blocks water from draining through the ground. It must be assessed and addressed during site prep so water does not pool under your hardscape base.
Yes, grading is included in our site preparation work for every Tucson hardscape project. We slope the ground to move water away from your home and off finished surfaces.
Excavation depth depends on your specific soil conditions, including where caliche sits and what hardscape feature is being installed. We assess each Tucson site before determining the correct depth.
Yes, an unstable or improperly compacted base is a leading cause of paver movement and surface cracking in Tucson. Solid site prep with proper compaction keeps the base firm through heat and monsoon cycles.
We prepare sites for patios, walkways, driveways, retaining walls, and other hardscape features across Tucson. Each project starts with a site-specific assessment before any work begins.
